MAL in Nicaragua: 10 Years of Leadership and Learning

On Jan. 22, Diana Pierce MAL ’15  hosted alumni and current students of the Master of Arts in Leadership and Physician Assistant programs in a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the MAL course on Nicaragua on Jan. 22. A student, KARE-11 news anchor, and 2014 Nicaragua trip participant, Pierce welcomed Juan Carlos Lopez, program coordinator for the Center for Global Education and Experience in Nicaragua, and a longtime trip facilitator. The event raised more than $1,000 to benefit NIca HOPE, a nonprofit, based in Managua, that works with communities in Managua to offer long-term solutions to entrenched poverty through education and practical skills training. 16215742810_b17a955129_z15780677044_cfb9acc051_z

State Grant Advocacy Day at the Capitol

capitolAugsburg College had 1,054 State Grant recipients on campus this past academic year — more than 34 percent of all Augsburg undergraduates. In total, the college received more than $3.4 million in State Grant awards made to Augsburg students.

The impact of those funds on students, a high percentage of whom come from low-income households or are first-generation college students, cannot be overstated.

Yeng Vang ’14 says the state grant program helped him attend Augsburg. “I wouldn’t be here if not for grants and scholarships. Things like the State Grant allow you the opportunity to go to college, opening the door to future possibilities.”

This spring, students are heading to the Capitol again to advocate for the State Grant program and meet with their respective representatives.  STEP-UP, EAST, financial aid, Multicultural Students Services and Athletics are partnering to recruit and train students before the big day.  Students will embark to the Capitol on February 25 for a day that begins with grassroots organizing training, led by members of the Minnesota Private College Council, and ends with a reception at Augsburg College with affiliated representatives and student leaders.

Meet a Super Velkommen Jul Volunteer

Lee FurmanYou might know Lee (Dyrud) Furman ’61 from her time teaching in the social work department at Augsburg, or you might recognize her as one of the delightful Augsburg Associates dressed up in a bunad or traditional Norwegian costume at Velkommen Jul each year. She’s also the recipient of an Augsburg Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989. Furman is among the many fantastic Associates volunteers you will see if you stop by campus on Friday, Dec. 5. Velkommen Jul begins with chapel service at 10:40 a.m. and moves to the Christensen Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Furman fondly remembers the beautiful singing and enthusiasm of chapel, and the fellow alums she has known through the years. She has been a part of the Augsburg Associates for approximately 12 years, since she moved back to Minneapolis for the first time since college. You Gave to the Max, and We’re So Grateful

Give to the Max Day was Nov. 13, and we’re still beaming with pride. We came in #1 for giving among all MN colleges and universities again this year, but we’re even more proud to say that 1,300 Auggies near and far—including students, alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff—donated more than $432,000 to support The Augsburg Fund and 34 excellent Auggie projects. If you supported Augsburg on Give to the Max Day this year, we thank you for your generosity. Please enjoy our sincere, campus-wide appreciation for the good work we all did together.

Velkommen Jul volunteersThe Augsburg Associates are looking forward to hosting Velkommen Jul on Friday, December 5th on the Augsburg campus. It’s a busy day for us, preparing and serving our guests. If you are available to volunteer this year, please contact Lennore Bevis ’66 at 612-789-9458. Buttering lefse and breads, setting up the boutique and bake sale, pouring coffee and greeting guests are some of the areas where your help is needed. Thank you for considering this opportunity to not only be of service to the Associates, but to the entire Augsburg community!

StepUP Gala is a Success

StepUP galaThe annual StepUP®  Gala was held Oct. 24 at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. More than 350 attendees, including 100 StepUP alumni and current students, participated in the evening that included keynote speaker, author, and StepUP parent Sarah Nielsen; emcee, comedian Bill Arnold; and alumni speaker, Samuel O. Spafford ’09. A live auction featured a private party with dinner prepared by celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern, tropical getaways, a golf package and more.

Generous attendees brought in $290,000 in donations for the occasion, which is the primary fundraiser for  all StepUP activities. This year, StepUP serves more students than ever before as it helps students navigate their way toward a bachelor’s degree while maintaining a 93% sobriety rate. Volunteers Needed for Vespers

vespers servicePlan to be a part of Advent Vespers this year? If you’re able to lend a hand to this signature Augsburg College event, we’d love to welcome you as a volunteer at any one of five services. We could use many volunteers to usher and work the will-call table.

Vespers services will be held:

Friday, December 5: 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Saturday, December 6: 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Volunteers should plan to arrive at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis (333 S. 12th St.) 60-90 minutes prior to each service. The service lasts approximately 90 minutes.

If you are able to volunteer at Vespers this year, please contact Jenna Leahy at leahy@augsburg.edu.

If you haven’t looked into its work in helping students develop the skills, habits of mind, and values that are the foundation for life choices, career success, and active citizenship, please do so. There are so many ways that alumni can support our students on their vocational journey.

Alumni are a critical way that students can connect with internships, learn about employment opportunities and how to navigate the hiring process. Ultimately, the Strommen Center works to help students find their own meaningful work. Secretary of State Candidates Debate at Augsburg on Oct. 28

One week before the general election, Augsburg College hosts the fall Sabo Symposium, a debate between the four candidates running for the Minnesota Secretary of State. Bob Helland (Independence), Bob Odden (Libertarian), Dan Severson (Republican), and State Rep. Steve Simon (DFL) will square off at October 28, at 7 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center, on the Augsburg campus. 

The event is co-sponsored by the Minnesota League of Women Voters. Minnesota Public Radio’s The Uptake wrote about “17 Debates that Could Determine Minnesota’s Future” in a recent online article. Read more on The UpTake website.

Video of the forum will be livestreamed on TheUptake.org during the event. After the event, video will be available on the League of Women Voters Minnesota YouTube page.

Forum attendees may submit questions for the candidates by email in advance or in writing at the event.  Emailed questions should be sent to SOSquestions@lwvmn.org by noon on Monday, October 27. All questions will be anonymous and screened by a neutral committee.
